Safety Equipment: Your Life at the End of the Rope
When you're up high, there's no room for mistakes. Your gear should be your absolute confidence.
- Harness: This is the link between you and the rope. Choose a lightweight and minimally padded model for summer climbing, or a comfort model with 4 gear loops for the crag where you spend time hanging around.
- The Rope: Single for crag climbing (sturdy), double or twin for the mountains (allows for rappelling and cuts less on the edges). Always check the diameter according to your level and your belayer.
- Helmet: It protects you from falling rocks in the mountains, as well as from impacts against the wall if you fall headfirst. Modern models made from expanded foam (EPP) weigh less than 200g. You have no excuse not to wear one.
Performance: The Connection with the Rock
To get through the crux, you need precision.
- Climbing Shoes: This is your main weapon.
Beginner? Get a flat and stiff sole to avoid tiring your feet.
Expert? Dare to try asymmetry and a camber (banana shape) to grip tiny holds, but be prepared to endure a bit of pain.
- Chalk: Powder, balls, or liquid (for indoor use). It absorbs sweat so your hands don’t slip on the final hold.
